Annatto color is extracted from the tropical shrub Bixa orellana, which grows primarily in South America and Africa. It is one of the oldest natural colorants. It was used in antiquity for coloring foods, cosmetics and textiles. Nowadays, annatto is widely used to color dairy products, baked goods, cereals, pet foods and cosmetics. It provides shades ranging from vanilla to yellow to orange to reddish-orange, depending upon the grade and usage level.

Water-soluble annatto colors offer several advantages over other annatto products on the market:

• The 20%, 30% and 40% grades have a very low fiber content, making them ideal for use in gel caps and other sensitive applications.
• Low minimums and high pigment concentration make these products a very inexpensive alternative to water-soluble annatto liquids on a cost-in-use basis.
• The 20% and 40% grades are GMO free.
