FACTS ABOUT EAGLE BRAND:
Eagle Brand Sweetened Condensed Milk was introduced in 1856 by Gail Borden to combat food poisoning and other illnesses related to lack of refrigeration and preservation techniques. It became a household item during the Civil War when troops needed milk that would not spoil. The product later made contributions during WWI and WWII when it was heavily used during a sugar shortage. Additionally it was credited with significantly lowering the infant mortality rate in North America.

In 1931 the company offered homemakers $25 for their original recipes. The rules called for recipes in which Eagle Brand makes baking quicker, easier and foolproof - over 80,000 recipes were received. Quick and easy, foolproof recipes have been a key benefit of Eagle Brand through the decades.

Elsie the cow made her debut in 1938 in national consumer magazines and was the star attraction at the World's Fair in New York the following year. By the 1960's Elsie had become America's best known "spokes cow" and a recognized symbol of wholesomeness and quality. Today she remains one of the most recognizable icons.
